Plugged In: Communications at Yu Ming

Keeping our current parents informed and up-to-date is something we believe is essential for parent involvement and a strong school.   Here are the different ways parents receive information from the school:

EMAIL: Email is our primary way for communicating with parents.  All parents receive the following emails from Yu Ming Charter School:

This Week at Yu Ming: A bilingual weekly newsletter on Friday or Saturday that provides important updates and a look ahead at what is happening at school.  ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS ARE EXPECTED TO READ THIS EMAIL FOR IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SCHOOL.

Reminders and Requests: In addition to the weekly email, you will receive occasional notices from the school, such as reminders about early-release days, Board and Parent Action Group meetings, or other events and deadlines.

Yu Ming News Update:  All parents also receive the monthly Yu Ming News Update newsletter that goes to our email list of interested subscribers.

EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS:  In case of an emergency or urgent situation, our AlertNow system will use multiple methods to reach you, including email, text, and voice messages.  This system will send a broadcast message to the emergency contacts that you provide at the beginning of the year.

WEB SITE:  The Yu Ming Charter School website houses a wealth of information about the school and is regularly updated.  We strongly encourage parents to use the website as a resource. www.yumingschool.org

For Parents section:  Includes necessary information for potential and enrolled families:

  • Family Handbook: The official handbook and policies for students and families at Yu Ming.
  • Immersion Resources:  Information and tools for supporting your child’s immersion experience.
  • Parent Action Group: Description of our parent group, key members, and upcoming meetings.
  • Volunteer:  Volunteer opportunities and guidelines for volunteering.
  • At and Around School:  One-stop shopping for information about the school day, afterschool programs, drop-off & pick-up, parking, uniforms, and other logistics.

Parent Portal section:  This password-protected site is for currently enrolled families and consolidates information you need throughout the year into one place, including the most recent updates.  Password information was shared in the This Week at Yu Ming weekly email (contact cschwinn@yumingschool.org if you need help getting access):

  • This Week at Yu Ming: Links to current and past issues of the weekly newsletter.
  • Family Calendar:  A Google calendar that includes all school-related events, including the official academic calendar, Board and PAG meeting dates, deadlines and special events such as field trips, family socials, or Yu Ming community events.
  • Connect with Families: Includes photo roster of current Yu Ming families, links to the listserv
  • Get Involved: Parent Action Group and Volunteering: Links to Parent Action Group information and meetings, Board meetings, as well as volunteer opportunities
  • Help Your Student Succeed: Immersion resources including vocabulary lists, MP3s, and a discount on ChinesePod
  • Support Yu Ming: Information on our Amazon Affiliate, eScrip, and CafePress programs

FACEBOOK:  Our Yu Ming Facebook page has over 250 subscribers including both parents and non-parents. This is a great way to hear the latest about school developments.  We encourage parents using Facebook to “like” our page and share interesting posts with your networks.  www.facebook.com/yumingschool

PARENT LISTSERV:  The parent listserv enables parents and guardians of currently enrolled Yu Ming students* to connect and share with each other. This listserv is also used by the Parent Action Group committee leads and volunteer coordinators to engage parents in school volunteer opportunities and activities.  All listserv members are able to share ideas on topics and issues related to the school, plan events, organize volunteer efforts, and ask questions.  School staff are not included in the parent listserv; formal communications to the school should be communicated directly via email to specific staff or board members.

*Founding family members with future students also included.
