Yu Ming starts with you! Parent and volunteer involvement in any school can make the difference between a good school and a great school. At Yu Ming, there are many ways that family and community members can participate and contribute, regardless of availability, skills or interests.
Volunteers are the heart of our school and we want to thank all of our many volunteers who make Yu Ming a great school every day!
Volunteer NeedsWe have opportunities to volunteer in school and outside of school. Our in-school volunteer crew can always use an extra hand, and there are lots of opportunities outside of school to get engaged throughout the year. Current Needs
New 2012 Families Directory and Carpooling- One or more people needed to help pull together a parent directory to help parents connect with each other during the summer and help families know who they may be able to carpool with.
Uniform Sale Coordinator – One or more people needed to organize used uniform sale. Collect uniforms on June 22nd, price and sell at parent picnic on June 24th. Proceeds to go to Yu Ming School.
Event Co-ordinator, marketer, hospitality for June Event – Yu Ming will be hosting a discussion on education reform in early June featuring a notable speaker from the education world. Here are some opportunities for parents to help produce this exciting event.
- Event Promotion – Promoting the event throughout the public school community in Alameda and neighboring counties (3 people).
- Event Production – Helping to produce the event, including event logistics, before/during/after the event (3 people)
- Event Hospitality – Organizing the food/bar portion of the event, including beer/wine sales and complimentary food (2-3 people)
- VIP Coordinator – Organizing all facets of our VIPs (speakers) from their arrival through departure (1 person)
- Event Media – Someone to videotape the evening and someone to photograph the evening (2 people)
Writers Needed - Write Yu Ming history/story for website. Write about our accomplishments in this first year for the Yu Ming annual report.
Yu Ming Fall Gala - Help put on Yu Ming’s annual fundraising gala, including event management, securing sponsorships and donations, food and beverage and other activities.
Gala volunteers needed:
Co-chair for silent auction committee and 5 volunteers for this committee.
One lead person and five others to help procure sponsorships.
Marketing – 6 volunteers to work with Chrissy Schwinn to develop/implements marketing plan for 2012 Gala. One Volunteer to put together event program and the program book.
Three volunteers to mangage food and beverages.
One volunteer to organize raffle.
Volunteers on the night: One coordinator, 10 to set up, 16 throughout the night (2 hr shift), 6 auction spotters, 4 to man registration, 6 to man auction check out, 10 to take down at end of night.
Translation – Translators needed for Math textbooks for G2 and Science materials. Also need someone to make flashcards for subject based language for all grades.
Outside School-hours Volunteer Jobs
Marketing and Communications - Help get our great stories and accomplishments out to parents and the larger community! On-going needs throughout the year.
- Web producer: Post content into our WordPress site. HTML and weblayout/design experience needed.
- Email producer: Post content into our Mailchimp email service. HTML and weblayout/design experience needed.
- Photographers: Help secure photography to show what Yu Ming is about, from staff, site and classroom images to documenting family and community events.
- Communications committee chair: Lead Yu Ming’s marketing and communications to parents, incoming parents and the broader community. Work with principal to implement marketing and communications plans; engage other volunteers on activities including web site content, media relations, video and print production, etc. Marketing, journalism, writing or communications experience helpful!
Fund development
- Grant writing: Help write grants to foundations and corporations to fund Yu Ming
- Fund development committee chair: Exciting volunteer opportunities to help lead Yu Ming’s fund development efforts. Help develop and manage fundraising plan; coordinate with other volunteers on activities including grant writing, individual outreach, events, and email solicitations. Previous fundraising or sales experience preferred.
- Online and parent fundraising activities: Help set up and promote eScrip, Facebook Causes, merchandise and other online fundraising activities. Identify best opportunities and coordinate with fund development team and other parents to generate fun ideas for raising money for Yu Ming.
Office and Administration Support:
- Translation: Join our pool of translators to help Yu Ming communication in Mandarin, Spanish and other languages.
- Legal Support: Provide legal advice in the areas of immigration, non-profit, general corporation, tax and employment Law
School-hours Volunteer Jobs
- Recess – Escort children safely to and from Lincoln Park and monitor them during morning recess 9 – 10am.
- Lunch – Assist with set-up, service and take down of lunch 11.15 to 12.15 approx.
- Classroom volunteer – Assist teacher with any tasks. Please note there will be no parent volunteers in the classrooms for the first month of school to allow the children to settle in and bond with their teachers.
- Room Parent – Each classroom will need one room parent whose role will be to assist the teacher with communication between their classrooms parents and the teacher. They will send out a weekly email to parents and provide support for their teacher with logistics for field trips, supplies and general classroom organization. The aim of this role is to free up the teacher to be able to focus on teaching.
