Alumni Return to Yu Ming

August 16, 2022

Every summer, Yu Ming offers a two-week Summer Boost program that provides extra support in English and Mandarin for students. New to the program this year was a team of nine volunteer alumni.

“I miss Yu Ming and I like working with children,” said Lynnsy ‘20. Alumni from our four cohorts, 2019 through 2022, volunteered. “I used to have trouble and now I’m really good at English so I like helping other students,” said Ket ’19.

Over the past few years, alumni have started coming back to Yu Ming and getting involved in areas they feel most passionate about, from outreach, to working in afterschool, to sharing with their former schoolmates how they utilize their Mandarin skills in high school. “I volunteered during distance learning with 1st graders while at Yu Ming and I enjoyed it. Plus I like being here—Yu Ming is a place I feel at home,” said Clara ’22.

Zachary ’19 has been supporting student recruitment for two years: “I enjoyed my time at Yu Ming and felt prepared for high school, so I knew that I wanted to give back and stay involved. . . . Yu Ming has done a great job creating a diverse community within recent years and by sharing my experience as an alum, I hope I can make parents’ decision to enroll at Yu Ming even easier.”

It means so much to us that our former students come back, have an impact on our community, and serve as role models and mentors to younger Yu Ming students. We’re proud of our graduates who continue to be global citizen changemakers at Yu Ming and beyond.
